Kosher Jerky in the Sukkah: A Snack That Needs Nothing
Kosher jerky is one of the easiest foods to keep in a sukkah: it needs no fridge, no kitchen and no plates, and it does not mind a week outdoors in a sealed bag. Whether you eat in the sukkah or sit there between meals, a bag of dried beef takes care of the gap. Here is how to use it through Sukkot.
Why it suits the sukkah
- No refrigeration. Sealed bags keep for months at room temperature.
- Nothing to carry back and forth. No hot dishes, no serving spoons.
- Weather-tolerant. A cool evening or a warm afternoon makes no difference to a sealed bag.
- Visitors. Sukkot is a week of guests dropping in. Something substantial to offer, instantly, is useful.
Eating in the sukkah
The rules on which foods must be eaten in the sukkah depend on what counts as a meal versus a snack, and communities and individuals differ, some eating everything in the sukkah. That is between you and your rabbi. Practically, jerky is simply easy to eat there.
Keeping it good outdoors
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Rain or damp evenings | Keep unopened bags in a sealed box or the house. Dried meat pulls moisture from damp air once opened |
| A bowl on the sukkah table | Put out what will be eaten in a sitting; reseal the rest |
| Warm afternoons | Fine for sealed bags. Keep opened ones out of direct sun |
| Wasps and bees | Sweet, glazed jerky attracts them in early autumn. Biltong less so |
Jerky or biltong?
For a sweet snack the kids reach for, Meat Candy. For a savory bowl that holds up outdoors and pairs with a l'chaim, biltong. Many families put out both.
Chol Hamoed trips
Sukkot's intermediate days are travel days for many families: parks, zoos, drives. 1 oz minis are made for this. One per person, sealed until it is eaten, no cooler needed. Everything we make is meat, so keep dairy snacks in a separate bag.
How much for the week
A family that snacks on it daily through Sukkot gets through about a pound. Order before Yom Tov; sealed bags keep for months, so there is no downside to ordering early.
Our kosher beef jerky and biltong are certified Glatt Kosher. See the certificates.
