Kosher Jerky on a High-Protein Diet
If you keep kosher and eat for protein, certified dried beef is one of the few convenient options that works: most protein bars are dairy, most jerky is not kosher, and most ready-made kosher protein needs a fridge. Here is where kosher jerky and biltong fit in a high-protein diet, and which to pick.
The kosher protein problem
| Usual protein snack | The kosher catch |
|---|---|
| Protein bars | Often dairy (whey, milk protein). Not after meat |
| Protein shakes | Usually dairy; need mixing |
| Mass-market jerky | Almost never certified |
| Deli meat, chicken | Needs a fridge |
| Certified dried beef | Meat, shelf-stable, no mixing |
What is in it
A 3 oz bag of our Original biltong has around 36 g of protein and 240 calories, with no added sugar and next to no carbohydrate. It is salty, because salt does the preserving, so count sodium if you watch it. Full nutrition facts are printed on every bag.
Biltong or jerky for protein?
| Biltong, Original | Meat Candy | |
|---|---|---|
| Added sugar | None | Yes, it is glazed |
| Best for | Everyday protein, cutting, keto | A treat that still has protein |
For a protein-first diet, Original biltong is the pick. Loaded Garlic has no added sugar either. Meat Candy is the sweet one; treat it as a treat.
Timing it
- After training, alongside a carbohydrate source.
- Between meals, to hit a daily protein target without cooking.
- On travel days, when certified protein is otherwise impossible.
Meat and dairy with a protein diet
This is where kosher lifters get tripped up: a jerky snack, then a whey shake an hour later, runs into the wait between meat and dairy. Plan the order, or use a pareve protein powder (pea, rice or egg-white based, if certified pareve) on meat days. More on waiting times after jerky.
Buying for it
If you eat it daily, bulk sliced biltong is the best price per ounce. Split it into 1–2 oz portions on the day it arrives.
