Kosher Jerky for Shabbos Afternoon
Kosher jerky suits a Shabbos afternoon because it needs nothing that Shabbos makes difficult: no heating, no refrigeration, no preparation and no cutlery. Open a sealed bag and it is ready. Here is how to use it for the long summer afternoon, the kids' snack between lunch and seudah shlishit, and the table that sits out for hours.
Why dried beef works on Shabbos
- No cooking or reheating. It is ready to eat as it comes.
- No refrigeration. Sealed bags keep for months at room temperature, so nothing needs to come in and out of the fridge.
- It sits out. A bowl can stay on the table from lunch into the afternoon.
- It is real food. Around 36 g of protein in a 3 oz bag of our biltong. It fills a gap a bowl of candy does not.
Opening bags on Shabbos
Opening packages on Shabbos raises its own questions, especially tearing through lettering or creating a reusable container. Many people open bags before Shabbos, or empty them into a bowl on Friday. Ask your rabbi what your practice is.
Jerky or biltong for a long afternoon?
| Meat Candy (jerky) | Biltong | |
|---|---|---|
| Out in a bowl for hours | Glaze can go tacky in a humid room | Keeps drying and gets firmer. Holds up better |
| Kids | Sweet and familiar. Usually their pick | Original is mild; Peri Peri is hot |
| Seudah shlishit | A sweet note next to fish and salads | A savory, substantial addition |
For a hot summer Shabbos with the bowl out all afternoon, biltong holds up better. For the kids, Meat Candy usually wins.
Meat and dairy on Shabbos afternoon
Jerky is meat. If your seudah shlishit is dairy, or the afternoon snack table has cheese and cake, keep the jerky off it, or keep it on its own plate at the meat end. After snacking on it, your usual wait before dairy applies. More on waiting times after jerky.
How much for Shabbos
- A family snack between meals: one 3 oz bag.
- Guests over for the afternoon: about 2 oz per person alongside other food.
- A stock for several weeks: a pound of bulk sliced biltong, split into bags before it goes in the cupboard.
Our kosher beef jerky and biltong are certified Glatt Kosher. See the certificates.
