Kosher Jerky for Yom Tov Travel
Traveling for Yom Tov is where kosher food gets hardest, and certified dried beef is one of the few foods that solves it: substantial, shelf-stable, no kitchen needed, and it keeps for the whole trip. Here is what to pack, how much, and how to keep it good on the road, in the air, and at someone else's house.
The Yom Tov travel problem
- Airports, rest stops and roadside restaurants rarely have kosher food.
- Hosts are often cooking for a crowd, and a guest who can feed themselves between meals is a relief.
- Hotels and rented apartments may have no kosher kitchen at all.
- Two- and three-day Yom Tovim mean long stretches without shopping.
What to pack
| Trip | Pack |
|---|---|
| A drive of a few hours | A 3 oz bag or two minis per person |
| A flight | Minis, one per person per leg, plus spares for delays |
| A three-day Yom Tov at a host's home | About 1 oz per person per day as a between-meals snack |
| A hotel or rental with no kosher kitchen | More: around 2–3 oz per person per day, alongside fruit and crackers |
Flying with it
Dried meat is solid food, not a liquid, so it goes through airport security in the US in your carry-on. International rules on bringing meat into another country are a different matter; check before you fly, especially to places with strict agricultural rules. Keep it sealed until you land.
At someone else's house
A sealed, certified bag is easy for a host whatever their level of observance: it needs no kitchen, no plates and no questions. It also makes a good hostess gift for a host who keeps kosher; a sampler pack travels well and is not another box of chocolates.
Keeping it good
- Sealed bags keep three to six months. Nothing to worry about on a week's trip.
- Do not leave bags on a car dashboard in the sun.
- Once opened, reseal and finish within a few days.
- Keep it apart from dairy snacks in your bag. It is meat.
Our kosher beef jerky and biltong are certified Glatt Kosher, and the certificates are published. Order well before Yom Tov; US orders over $50 ship free.
