High Protein, Low Sugar Snacks: What to Eat and What to Check
The best high protein, low sugar snacks are plain dried meat, hard-boiled eggs, plain Greek yogurt, hard cheese, unsweetened nuts and roasted chickpeas, and the ingredient list matters more than the front of the package. We make certified Glatt Kosher biltong, and our Original has no sugar in its ingredient list.

"Low sugar" is easy to say and hard to shop for. Plenty of snacks that call themselves high protein are candy with a good publicist. This guide sorts snacks by what is actually in them, shows you what to read on a label, and is honest about where our own products fit. Everything we make is certified Glatt Kosher, so we also flag which of these snacks work in a kosher kitchen.
What "high protein, low sugar" should mean
There is no single rule shoppers can rely on. The words on the front of a package are marketing, so use your own test. A good snack in this category passes three checks.
- Protein is the reason it exists. If the first ingredient is a sweetener, a syrup or a flour, the protein is a side effect.
- Sugar is not hiding under another name. Syrup, cane juice, honey, brown sugar, dextrose and fruit juice concentrate are all sugar.
- The ingredient list is short. The shorter it is, the fewer places sugar can hide.
The simplest way to pass all three is to buy food that is mostly one thing: meat, egg, milk, a nut or a bean. Start there and work outward.
The snacks that pass without trying
These foods are high in protein by nature. Sugar is not part of the recipe, so your only job is to avoid the flavored versions.
Dried meat
Dried beef is the strongest example, and yes, it is our business, so weigh that accordingly. The reason it works is structural. Drying concentrates the meat, and the preservation comes from salt, vinegar and air, not from sugar. It is high in protein, it needs no refrigeration, and it comes sealed.
Our Sliced Biltong is the everyday bag, three ounces of sliced, ready-to-eat biltong. Original is grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. There is no sugar in that list. Loaded Garlic is beef, coriander, garlic, roasted garlic, salt, tomato powder and vinegar, also with no sugar listed. Peri Peri adds brown sugar. If you are watching sugar closely, start with Original or Loaded Garlic.
Our Original biltong lists no sugar in its ingredients: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. If you want it, ask us what is available before you order, and confirm on the label of the bag you receive.

Hard-boiled eggs
An egg has protein and essentially no sugar, and a batch keeps for several days in the fridge. The catch is that it is not a pocket snack. It needs a cold place to live and a shell to deal with. Great at home, awkward in a car.
Plain Greek yogurt and cottage cheese
Both are high in protein, and both are low in sugar only when you buy them plain. Flavored cups are where the sugar lives. Buy plain and add your own berries or a few nuts. One kosher note: these are dairy, so keep them separate from meat, and wait between meat and dairy according to your family's custom.
Cheese
Hard cheese is high in protein and low in sugar, and it holds up in a lunch bag with an ice pack. It is also salty and heavy. Fine as part of a snack, a weak choice if you want something light.
Unsweetened nuts and roasted chickpeas
Nuts bring protein, fat and a little fiber. Roasted chickpeas are crunchy and the closest thing to a chip that has protein in it. Both are shelf-stable. Both are also easy to find in a honey-roasted or candied version that changes the picture completely. Look for "unsweetened," "plain" or "lightly salted," then read the ingredient list anyway. Nuts are also a common allergen, which matters for school and office snacking.
Where sugar hides in "healthy" snacks
This is the part most lists skip. These categories are marketed as high protein, and many of them carry a lot of sugar.
- Protein bars. Some are close to candy bars with added protein powder. Others are fine. You cannot tell from the box. Read the ingredient list and see where the sweeteners fall.
- Flavored yogurt. The protein is real, but so is the sugar in the fruit layer.
- Granola and trail mix. Often held together with syrup or honey, and sometimes with chocolate or candied fruit.
- Sweet jerky. Jerky is made by cooking sliced meat in a marinade, and many marinades are sweet. It can be a good snack. It is just not a low sugar one by default.

Biltong versus jerky when sugar is the question
Both are dried beef. They are made differently, and that changes the sugar story.
Biltong is air-dried. The meat is cured with salt, vinegar and spices and hung to dry. It is savory and salty, and sugar is optional rather than structural. Jerky is cooked and marinated, and sugar is usually part of the glaze. Our Meat Candy is the sweeter end of our shelf. It is made from real sliced beef, in Hickory Kickory Dock and Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep, and it is cooked and glazed on purpose. We make it because people love it. We do not pitch it as low sugar, and you should read the label on the bag if sugar is a concern.
So the honest answer is this. For the lowest sugar, pick biltong. For the sweetest, pick Meat Candy. Plenty of households keep both and eat each when it fits. Biltong is the wrong pick if you want something sweet, and jerky is the wrong pick if you are watching sugar.

How to read a label in 30 seconds
Do this in the store or on the product page. It takes less time than you think.
- Ignore the front. Words like "protein," "natural" and "wholesome" are marketing.
- Read the first three ingredients. They are the largest by weight. You want a food, not a sweetener.
- Scan for sugar's other names. Syrup, honey, cane sugar, brown sugar, dextrose, maltodextrin, fruit juice concentrate.
- Check the sugar line on the nutrition panel. If "added sugars" is listed, that is the number that matters most.
- Check the serving size. A bag that lists two servings is one serving if you eat the bag.
- If you keep kosher, look for the certification mark. A "kosher-style" claim means nothing without one.
Which snack for which moment
- At your desk or in the car: dried meat or roasted chickpeas. Neither needs a fridge or a utensil.
- At home after a workout: eggs or plain Greek yogurt.
- In a kid's lunchbox: check your school's rules first. Many schools restrict nuts.
- On Shabbos or Yom Tov: dried meat is useful because it needs no cooking or reheating. See Shabbos and Yom Tov: Food That Needs No Kitchen.
Bottom line
Buy food that is mostly one thing, read the ingredient list instead of the front of the box, and treat added sugar as the number to watch. Dried beef like our Original and Loaded Garlic biltong is a simple way to get protein with no sugar in the recipe. Sweet jerky, flavored yogurt and most bars are where to be careful.
