Biltong on a Weight-Loss Diet: Where It Helps and Where It Does Not

Biltong can be a useful snack while losing weight, for a plain reason: it is mostly protein, it has no added sugar in the Original blend, and it is hard to eat quickly. It is not a weight-loss food in itself, and it has two real catches: salt, and how easy it is to finish the bag. This guide covers where it helps, where it does not, and how to portion it.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you are losing weight under a doctor's or dietitian's care, or you have been told to watch your sodium, check with them first.

What is in a bag

Per 3 oz bag of Original About
Protein 36 g
Calories 240
Added sugar None
Carbohydrate Next to none
Sodium Significant. Salt does the preserving. Full figures are on the bag

A 3 oz bag is roughly two servings. The full nutrition panel is printed on every bag, and it is worth reading once.

Where it helps

  • Protein keeps you full. Snacks that are mostly protein tend to be more satisfying per calorie than snacks that are mostly sugar or refined starch. That is the main reason biltong turns up on weight-loss shopping lists.
  • It replaces the worse option. The real win is what it stands in for: the vending machine, the afternoon pastry, the handful of chips.
  • It is slow to eat. Dried meat takes chewing. It is hard to eat absent-mindedly the way you can eat a bag of chips.
  • It needs nothing. No fridge, no prep. The healthy option is only useful if it is the easy one, and biltong lives in a desk drawer or a car for months unopened.

Where it does not help

  • It still has calories. 240 in a 3 oz bag is reasonable for the protein it carries, but a bag eaten on top of your meals is 240 extra calories.
  • The salt is real. If you are watching sodium for blood pressure or any other reason, count it. Salt can also mean a little water retention the next day, which shows up on the scale and is not fat.
  • Not every dried meat is the same. Sweet jerky, including our own Meat Candy, is glazed with sugar. It is a treat, not a diet snack. Peri Peri biltong has a little brown sugar in the blend; Original and Loaded Garlic have none added.

How to portion it

This is where most people go wrong. An open 3 oz bag on the desk becomes an empty 3 oz bag by 4 p.m.

  1. Buy 1 oz minis. Each one is a portion, sealed, finished in one go. Per ounce they cost more than big bags; for portion control, that premium is the point.
  2. If you buy bulk, split it into 1 oz or 1.5 oz portions in sealed bags the day it arrives.
  3. Pair it with something high in fiber like an apple, carrots or cucumber, for a snack that fills you up for longer.
  4. Use it to replace, not add. Decide which snack it is taking the place of.

Which flavor

Original is the cleanest choice: beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. Loaded Garlic has no added sugar and is the one to try if Original feels plain. Keep Peri Peri for when you want heat; the sugar in it is small, but it is there.

The short answer

As a replacement for a sweeter or starchier snack, portioned and counted, biltong is one of the better options on the shelf. As an extra on top of everything else, it is just calories. Start with Original minis.
