Kosher Jerky and Biltong for Sheva Brachos and Simchas
At a sheva brachos or any simcha with a meat meal, a board of kosher biltong or a bowl of jerky is an easy, memorable addition: it needs no kitchen, sits out for hours, and pairs with the l'chaim. Here is how to use it at the week of sheva brachos, a vort, an engagement party or a bris.
Why it suits a simcha
- No kitchen, no warming. Sheva brachos are often hosted by different families each night, in homes, shuls or halls. Dried beef travels to all of them.
- It sits out. From the start of the evening to the last speech.
- It goes with drinks. Whiskey and dried beef are a natural pairing for a l'chaim.
- It stands out. Most guests have never had good biltong.
Ideas by event
| Event | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Sheva brachos | A biltong slab carved at the table, or a bowl as guests arrive |
| Vort or engagement party | Bowls of sliced biltong and Meat Candy near the drinks |
| Bris or kiddush after | Sliced, in small bowls. See the kiddush table guide |
| Gift for the chassan and kallah | A slab with a board and knife for their new home |
How much
As one item among many, about 1 oz per guest. As a featured item with drinks, about 2 oz. For a sheva brachos of 30, a pound slab or a pound of bulk sliced is plenty.
Meat and dairy
Dried beef belongs at a meat simcha. Many sheva brachos are meat meals, but some are dairy. Check with the host before you bring it, and keep it off any dairy dessert table.
Flavors
Original for the whole room. Loaded Garlic for savory without heat. Peri Peri in a small, labeled bowl. Meat Candy for the younger guests.
Our kosher beef jerky and biltong are certified Glatt Kosher, and the certificates are published for the host or the caterer. Order a week or more ahead; sealed bags keep for months.
