Kosher Jerky for a Nut-Free School Lunchbox
Kosher jerky is one of the few protein snacks that works in a nut-free school lunchbox: no nuts, no refrigeration, certified, and kids actually eat it. Many day schools are nut-free and kosher, which rules out a lot of the usual options. Here is how to use it, which flavors kids like, and what to check with the school.
Why it suits a school lunchbox
- No nuts. None in our blends.
- No fridge or ice pack. A sealed bag is fine in a backpack all day.
- Real protein. A change from crackers and fruit snacks.
- Certified. Works for kosher schools.
What to check with the school
| School rule | What to check |
|---|---|
| Nut-free | Our blends contain no nuts. If the school requires a nut-free facility statement, ask us |
| Meat or dairy lunch days | Many schools run dairy lunches. Jerky is meat, so it may only go in on meat days |
| Accepted hechsherim | Some schools list accepted agencies. Compare with our certificates |
| Sugar rules | Some schools limit sweets. Original biltong has no added sugar; Meat Candy is glazed |
What kids like
- Meat Candy is sweet and familiar. Most kids' first pick.
- Original biltong is mild and savory. Kids who like salami tend to like it.
- Skip Peri Peri unless your child already loves spicy food. It has real heat.
How much
A 1 oz mini is the right lunchbox portion: finished in one sitting, nothing half-open coming home. For a school week, five minis.
Choking and small kids
Dried meat is chewy. For young children, tear or cut pieces small, and supervise as you would with any chewy food. Biltong is more tender than jerky and often easier for kids.
Meat and dairy at lunch
If the lunchbox also has a yogurt or cheese stick, jerky and dairy are in the same meal. On meat days, pack pareve sides: fruit, vegetables, pretzels, crackers.
