High Protein Meal Prep: Where Dried Beef Saves You a Step
The easiest way to add protein to meal prep without more cooking is a ready-to-eat dried beef, packed into the box the day you prep. We make certified Glatt Kosher biltong, and it is the one protein in our kitchen that needs no oven, no pan and no reheating, so it saves you a step rather than adding one.
This guide is about the whole week, not one recipe. It covers what a high-protein, lower-calorie prep day looks like, where dried beef earns a place in it, and where it does not. We are a snack maker, not a dietitian. If you are prepping for a medical reason, ask your doctor.
What high-protein, low-calorie meal prep actually asks of you
Most people who search for this want the same three things. Enough protein that they are not hungry at 3 p.m. Portions that stay sensible. And food that holds up for four or five days.
The usual answer is a lean protein, a vegetable and a starch, cooked in bulk on Sunday. It works. The catch is that the protein is the slow part. Chicken breast has to be cooked, cooled, portioned and reheated. By Thursday it is dry. Many people quit prep not because the plan is bad, but because the cooking is a chore.
There is also a second gap that nobody plans for: the snack between meals. A lunch box with a good main and nothing else sends you to the vending machine. A prepped snack closes that gap.
We are not going to give you calorie counts for our products here. If you are tracking, read the label on the bag and log what it says. A good rule for any prep plan is to build it from the label, not from a guess.
Where dried beef saves you a step
Biltong is a South African air-dried beef. It is cured with salt and vinegar, flavored with spices, then hung to dry. It is ready to eat as is. Nothing to cook, and nothing to reheat. It is high in protein, which is the whole reason it shows up in a prep box.
That gives it three real uses on prep day.
- The no-cook protein. Add a few slices to a salad, a grain bowl or a box of cut vegetables. You skip one pan.
- The snack slot. Pack a small bag beside the meal. It covers the gap between lunch and dinner.
- The backup. It sits in a bag, a drawer or a desk with no refrigeration. When a prepped meal gets eaten early, or a meeting runs late, you still have protein.
Our Sliced Biltong comes in a 3 oz bag, already sliced, in Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. Our Sliced Biltong Mini's are one ounce each, which makes them the easy unit for a box: one bag, one snack, no deciding.
The honest limit: biltong is a snack and a topper, not a full meal. It is also a salt-cured product, so it is not a fit if you need to keep sodium low. Read the label, and if a doctor has told you to watch salt, ask them first.
Four prep boxes built around a ready-to-eat protein
These are assembly jobs, not recipes that need a stove. Quantities are for one box. Multiply by the number of days you are prepping.
1. Chopped salad box
- 2 cups chopped romaine
- 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1/2 cucumber, diced
- 1/4 cup canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon lemon juice, in a small separate container
- 1 mini bag of Original biltong, torn or cut into short pieces and added at the table
Keep the biltong out of the salad until you eat. Wet greens soften it. This is meat, so if you keep a kosher kitchen, leave out any dairy topping. Keep meat and dairy separate, and wait as long as your family's custom requires before dairy.
2. Egg and vegetable box
- 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled
- 1 cup sliced bell pepper and carrot sticks
- 1/4 cup hummus in a small container
- 1 mini bag of Loaded Garlic biltong on the side
Boil the eggs for 10 minutes, cool them in cold water, and they keep in the fridge in the shell. Eggs are pareve, and the biltong is meat, so for a kosher household this box is one to pack and eat in the right order, not mix on one plate. Ask your rabbi if you are unsure how your family handles it.
3. Rice and bean bowl
- 3/4 cup cooked brown rice
- 1/2 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup steamed broccoli or frozen vegetables, thawed
- A squeeze of lime
- A small handful of Peri Peri biltong, cut into thin strips, on top
Cook the rice once and portion it into four boxes. The biltong adds heat and chew where you would normally add chicken. Peri Peri has real heat, so try a small bag before you build a week around it.
4. The desk-drawer snack kit
- 1 apple or a small bag of grapes
- 1 mini bag of biltong
- A handful of raw almonds, if your workplace allows nuts
Nothing here needs a fridge, so it can live in a bag or a drawer. It is the kit that stops the vending machine run.
How to portion and store it so the week works
Prep goes wrong in small ways. These habits prevent most of them.
- Portion on day one. If you buy a bigger bag, split it into small sealed bags or containers the day it arrives. It takes five minutes and stops you eating a week of biltong by Wednesday.
- Keep it dry. Store biltong away from wet ingredients. Pack it in its own bag or compartment. Moisture from greens or rice changes the texture.
- Reseal after opening. An opened bag is best finished within a few days. We cover this in more detail in Biltong Shelf Life: How Long an Opened Bag Really Lasts.
- Prep the fresh parts for a short window. Cooked rice, eggs and cut vegetables need a fridge and are best eaten within about four days. Biltong does not, but the rest of the box does.
If you eat this way every week, a larger format is cheaper per ounce than one-ounce bags. Our Bulk Biltong, 1 lb of Sliced Biltong is built for exactly that kind of steady habit. The only rule is to portion it right away.
When dried beef is the wrong pick
We would rather you buy the right thing than the wrong thing from us.
- If you need a low-sodium plan, dried meat as a category is a poor fit. Check the label and ask your doctor.
- If you want a full meal, biltong will not do it alone. It tops and supports. Build the base from vegetables, a grain or beans.
- If you want soft, moist protein, biltong is dense and chewy by design. Cooked chicken or eggs will suit you better.
- If you avoid added sugar, read each flavor. Peri Peri lists brown sugar. Our Original biltong lists no sugar in its ingredients: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. Check the product page for current availability.
- If you are comparing it with jerky, know that our Meat Candy is cooked, glazed and sweet. It is a great jerky, but biltong is the better fit for a savory prep box. Check the Meat Candy label before you plan around it.
Other dried meats, such as venison, pork, fish, chicken or bacon, work in a prep box too. We sell beef only, so we will not tell you which to buy. Compare the labels for sugar, salt and a short ingredient list.
Shopping for it
If you keep kosher, buy a product with real certification. Ours is certified Glatt Kosher, and you can read what that means on our kosher biltong page. You can browse our kosher beef jerky collection, or see every size and flavor on Buy Biltong Online. US orders over $50 ship free, and we ship within the US only.

Bottom line
Good meal prep is the plan you will actually repeat. Cook the base once, keep the protein simple, and give yourself one shelf-stable snack for the gaps. Dried beef saves you a step where it fits and is the wrong tool where it does not. Start with a small bag, read the label, and build from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is biltong good for high-protein meal prep?
It is high in protein and needs no cooking, so it is easy to add to a box. It works best as a topper or a snack, not as the whole meal. Read the label for protein and sodium so you can log it correctly.
Does biltong need to be refrigerated in a meal prep box?
No. It is cured and air-dried, and it needs no refrigeration. The other items in the box, such as eggs, cooked rice and cut vegetables, still do. Pack the biltong in its own bag so it stays dry.
Can I cook biltong into a prepped meal?
You do not need to. It is already cured and ready to eat. We suggest adding it cold or at room temperature on top of a finished dish, which keeps its texture.
How much biltong should I put in one box?
A one-ounce Mini is an easy single portion for a snack. For a topper, a small handful of slices is plenty. If you are tracking intake, weigh it and use the numbers on the label.
Is dried beef a low-calorie food?
We do not make a calorie claim for our products. It is high in protein, and the label lists the numbers. If you are counting calories, use those and decide what fits your plan.
Which flavor is best for meal prep?
Original is the most flexible and has no sweetener listed. Loaded Garlic is savory and rounder. Peri Peri has real heat and includes brown sugar. Try the Mini sizes first so you do not commit to a flavor you have not tasted.
Can I mix biltong with dairy in a kosher meal prep box?
Biltong is meat, so keep it away from dairy ingredients, as with any meat. Customs on how long to wait between meat and dairy differ by family, so follow yours or ask your rabbi.
