Gifts for Hunters: Food for the Blind, the Truck and Camp

The best food gift for a hunter is something that rides in a pocket, needs no cooking and no cooler, and tastes good at 5 a.m. in the cold: sealed bags of ready-to-eat beef biltong and jerky. Ours is certified Glatt Kosher, so it also works for hunters who keep kosher and for anyone who shares a camp with one.

Grub makes certified Glatt Kosher biltong and beef jerky in small batches in Florida, from grass-fed beef. We are not hunters writing from a deer stand. We are a snack maker who knows what a sealed bag of dried beef does well and what it does not. This guide covers what a hunter actually eats, what makes a good gift, and where food is the wrong gift. Our kosher biltong page explains the certification.

What hunters actually need from food

Hunting food has a short list of jobs. The best gifts do all of them.

It has to be eaten quietly and one-handed. In a blind or a stand, you do not unwrap a sandwich. You open a small bag and eat a few pieces. Crinkly wrappers and crumbly bars lose here.

It has to survive the trip. A pack, a truck seat or a camp box gets warm, cold and jostled. Dried meat in a sealed bag does not need a cooler. That is the whole case for it.

It has to be real food. A long sit before dawn is hard on a candy bar. Dried beef is high in protein and salty, which is what most people want after hours outside.

It has to be easy to share. Hunting is social. A bag passed around the truck on the drive out is half the pleasure.

The gift: biltong and jerky, and which to pick

Biltong and jerky look similar and are made in opposite ways. Both are ready to eat.

Sliced Biltong is cured with vinegar and salt, then air-dried. It is never cooked. The slices are cut thick and tender, savory rather than sweet. It comes in Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. Original is beef first, then the warm citrus note of coriander. Peri Peri has real heat building behind it. Loaded Garlic is roasted garlic, rounder and savory. Each bag is three ounces. Our Original biltong lists no sugar in its ingredients: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar.

Meat Candy is our beef jerky. It is cooked and glazed, and unashamedly sweet. Hickory Kickory Dock is smoky hickory with the sweetness behind it, and it tastes closest to what most people mean by jerky. Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep is Korean BBQ, sweet and savory together. It is made from real sliced beef. Because it uses a glaze, anyone watching a specific ingredient should check the label.

If you are not sure which one your hunter prefers, the safe answer is the Biltong Sampler Pack. It holds one mini bag each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. You do not know another person's heat tolerance as well as you think, and a sampler lets them find out on their own terms.

Our longer comparison, Meat Candy vs. Biltong, goes deeper if you want to choose with more care.

Pack size matters more than flavor

A hunter does not sit still and finish a three-ounce bag in one go. The question is how the food travels.

Minis for the pack. Sliced Biltong Mini's are one ounce, sealed, in Original, Peri Peri or Loaded Garlic. They are the same biltong in a bag you finish in one sitting. That makes them the right size for a jacket pocket, a pack lid or a day in the blind. Per ounce they are the most expensive way to buy biltong. That is a portioning premium, and for a pocket it is worth paying.

The 3 oz bag for the truck. The standard Sliced Biltong bag lives in the console or the camp box. It is better value than Minis and good for sharing on the drive.

A bigger stash for the whole season. Hunters who go through a lot should look at the full range on Buy Biltong Online, which has every size, flavor and sampler.

One practical habit: once a bag is opened, close it and eat it within a reasonable time. Our guide on what happens to biltong in a hot car, a fridge and a sealed bag covers how to treat it in a truck.

Where each bag earns its place: the blind, the truck and camp

It helps to think about the three places a hunter eats, because each one wants something different.

In the blind or the stand. This is the quiet, cold, hungry part of the day. You want a small bag you can open without fuss and food you can eat a piece at a time. Sliced biltong suits this well because the slices are thick and tender, and you do not need a knife, a plate or a free hand. Open the bag, take a few pieces, fold the top over.

In the truck. Here you have a console, a dash and a passenger. This is where the 3 oz bag and the Meat Candy live. Sweet jerky is good on a long drive in the dark because it is easy to eat while the road is empty. Keep the bags out of a closed, sun-baked cab for long stretches.

At camp. This is the one place you can slow down. Biltong cut from a slab is a good camp food, but only if someone brings a board and a sharp knife. For most hunters, sliced bags are simpler, and a bag tossed on the table at the end of the day disappears fast. It also pairs with the rest of a camp meal without needing a fire or a stove.

Building a hunter's gift that feels like a gift

A single bag is a snack. Three or four things make a gift. Here are combinations that work.

The season-opener. A few Mini's in different flavors, a bag of Meat Candy, and something useful from you, like a good thermos or a pair of wool socks. Food plus something practical reads as thoughtful.

The camp contribution. A full 3 oz bag of each of two flavors, packed for the group. This one is for the person who hosts the camp, not for the hunter alone.

The first-timer's box. The sampler plus a short note on which one to open first. If your hunter has never had biltong, this is the right introduction. Our biltong beginner's guide is a good one to pass along.

If you want ready-made options, our biltong gift packs are built for this kind of giving. For something sweeter, browse our kosher beef jerky collection.

When food is the wrong gift for a hunter

An honest note, because not every hunter wants beef.

Many hunters make their own jerky. If your hunter dries venison or other game at home every fall, store-bought beef is not a replacement. It can still be a nice change, or a snack for the days when the freezer is empty. But if they take pride in their own batches, a gift of gear or a good knife may land better.

Some hunters keep kosher and some do not. That does not change the gift. Certified Glatt Kosher beef works for both, and it is easy to share around camp without anyone having to ask what is in it. If your hunter keeps kosher, keep the gift all meat and do not pair it with dairy. On any question about a particular custom, ask your rabbi.

Biltong is the wrong pick if the person wants sweet and soft. Biltong is savory, dry-cured and slightly firm. If they want something sweeter, choose Meat Candy instead.

Dried meat is a snack, not a meal. It is high in protein, but a hunter on a long trip still needs real meals. Treat your gift as the thing they reach for in between.

Mind the delivery address. We ship within the US only, and US orders over $50 ship free. A remote camp may not receive packages, so send it to a house and order early enough to arrive before the season.

The bottom line

A hunter wants food that is quiet, sealed, ready to eat and works without a cooler. Sliced Biltong in Minis for the pocket, a 3 oz bag for the truck and a bag of Meat Candy for the sweet tooth covers it. If you do not know their taste, send the sampler. If they make their own jerky, add gear and treat the food as a bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good food gift for a hunter?

Sealed, ready-to-eat dried beef is the easiest. Sliced Biltong Mini's fit a pocket, a 3 oz bag fits a truck console, and Meat Candy covers anyone who wants something sweeter. None needs cooking or refrigeration.

Is biltong or jerky better for hunters?

Neither is better. Biltong is savory, air-dried and never cooked. Jerky is cooked, glazed and sweet. Pick biltong for a savory snack and Meat Candy for a sweet one, or send both.

Does biltong need to be refrigerated?

No. Our sealed bags are ready to eat and need no refrigeration. Once opened, close the bag and eat it within a reasonable time, and keep it out of a hot, closed vehicle for long stretches.

Is Grub biltong kosher?

Yes. Grub biltong and Meat Candy are certified Glatt Kosher, made from grass-fed beef.

What should I get a hunter who has never tried biltong?

The Biltong Sampler Pack. It has one mini bag each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic, so they can find their flavor before buying more.

Can I ship a gift straight to a hunting camp?

Only if the camp has a US address that can receive a package. We ship within the US only, and US orders over $50 ship free. Order ahead of the season so it arrives in time.

What if my hunter makes their own jerky?

Then add something besides food. Store-bought beef is a nice change or a backup snack, but it will not replace their own batches. Pair it with gear or a tool they will use.
