Snacks for Gamers: No Grease on the Controller

The best snacks for gamers are dry, one-handed and quiet to eat: nothing greasy, nothing powdery, nothing that needs a napkin mid-fight. We make certified Glatt Kosher biltong and jerky, and dried meat fits that job better than chips or pizza, because your hands stay clean and one bag lasts a whole session.

Gaming snacks fail in a specific way. It is not taste. It is what the food does to your hands, your controller and your keyboard. Orange dust in the keys. A shiny thumb stick. A slice you cannot hold without letting go of the mouse. This is a guide to what works, what does not, and how to set up a snack that survives a long session.

What a gamer snack has to do

Judge every snack on five things. Most of the usual picks fail at least two.

  • It stays off the hardware. Grease, cheese dust and sticky coating all transfer to whatever you touch next. The controller is the first casualty.
  • It works one-handed. One hand is on the mouse, the stick or the wheel. The other has to do everything else.
  • It needs no prep and no cleanup. If you have to pause to open a container, find a plate or wash your hands, you will not bother and will go hungry instead.
  • It does not make you crash. A bag of candy is a quick spike and a slump an hour later. The slump always arrives at the worst point in the match.
  • It sits on the desk for hours. Anything that melts, wilts or needs a fridge is the wrong choice for a six-hour raid.

Hold the usual snacks up against that list. Chips: greasy and powdery. Pizza: grease, cheese and two hands. Candy: sticky, then a slump. Energy drinks: not food, and not a plan. A bowl of anything wet is a spill waiting to happen on the desk.

Why dried meat fits

Dried meat is one of the few foods that checks every box. It is dry to the touch, it needs no utensils, and it keeps at room temperature. It is also high in protein, which is the main reason it lasts longer than a bag of chips.

There are two kinds, and they behave differently at a desk.

  • Biltong is air-dried, savory and salty, with a warm note of coriander. The surface is dry. Our Sliced Biltong comes sliced and ready to eat, in Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic, so there is nothing to cut and nothing to prepare. Of everything we make, this is the cleanest thing to eat with a controller in your other hand.
  • Beef jerky is cooked, glazed and sweeter. Our Meat Candy (beef jerky in Hickory Kickory Dock and Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep) is real sliced beef with a glaze. That glaze is the trade-off for gamers. It is a little tacky, so check your fingers before you pick the controller back up. Many people eat jerky with the off hand and wipe once at the end. That is fine, but it is not as clean as biltong.

Both are beef only, and both are certified Glatt Kosher. If a friend at your LAN night or on your Discord keeps kosher, you can share a bag without a conversation about it. You can read how we handle certification on our kosher biltong page.

The setup: how to snack through a long session

The food is half of it. The other half is how you set it up, so you never have to leave the game or touch the wrong thing.

Portion it before you sit down

Do not put a full bag within reach of a long session. You will eat it without noticing. Pour a handful into a small cup or bowl, or pick a bag size that matches the session. Our Sliced Biltong Minis are one ounce each, sealed, in Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. One mini is one round of snacking. It is a good fit for a gaming bag, a backpack or a LAN event, because nothing is open until you want it.

Put the bowl on the off-hand side

If you play with the mouse in your right hand, put the snack on the left. That hand can reach a bowl for two seconds between actions. If you play on a controller, you have to put it down to eat, which is a good reason to pick a cleaner food.

Use the natural breaks

Loading screens, respawns and lobby waits are the moments to eat. Do not eat mid-fight. A dry, slow-chewing snack is easy to time this way, because you can take a piece and chew through the whole wait.

Keep a towel within reach

If you eat jerky, keep a small towel on the desk. It takes two seconds and keeps the glaze off the hardware. With biltong you can usually skip this step, but a towel never hurts.

Water first

Dried meat is salty, as all cured food is. Keep a glass of water on the desk. It is a good habit with any long session, and it is the thing most gamers skip.

The honest trade-offs

No snack is perfect for every setup. Here is where ours is the wrong pick.

  • It is chewy. Biltong gives way rather than snapping, and jerky takes real chewing. If you are on voice chat all session, chewing on an open mic is a fair complaint from your team. Mute while you eat, or save the snack for the breaks.
  • It is not crunchy. If what you want is the sound and feel of a chip, biltong will not do it. Our Beef Crisps are real beef dried until they snap, in Original, two ounces a bag. They are a test batch from our Grub Lab, so when they are gone they are gone until we decide to keep them. They are crunchy, which also means loud on a mic.
  • Peri Peri has real heat. Heat on your fingers and then on your eyes is a bad combination. If you rub your eyes in a long session, start with Original.
  • It is salty. That is part of how it is cured. Drink water, and do not make it your only food for a day.
  • It is not a meal. It is a snack that bridges you to the next real meal. A gamer who skips dinner for a bag of biltong will be hungry again by midnight.

What to pair it with

You do not need to build a spread. Dried meat does most of the work, and a few easy additions round it out.

  • Something fresh and dry: baby carrots, snap peas or apple slices. They are clean to eat and add crunch without grease.
  • Something with a little crunch: plain nuts, if no one near you has an allergy. Check the room first.
  • Water or unsweetened tea: not another sweet drink on top of the sugar you already have.

Skip the cheese. Dried beef and cheese is a classic board pairing, but meat and dairy are kept separate in a kosher household. For a desk, leaving the cheese out means the question never comes up.

Snacks for a group: LAN nights and stream marathons

When there are four or more of you, the plan changes. One person's bowl becomes everybody's bowl, so you want a format that shares well.

  • Pour a shared bowl and keep sealed bags in reserve. Sliced biltong disappears fast, so put out less than you think and refill from the bag.
  • Offer more than one flavor. Original is the safe one for everyone. Peri Peri divides a room, so label it. The Biltong Sampler Pack, with one mini each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic, is an easy way to let everyone find their own.
  • Hand out minis. One sealed bag per person is the cleanest way to share, and nobody reaches into a shared bowl with dirty hands.

Where to buy

Every format above is on our Buy Biltong Online page. If you would rather start with the sweeter side of the shelf, our kosher beef jerky collection has the Meat Candy. We ship across the US, and orders over $50 ship free. Nothing needs refrigeration, so a box can sit in a cupboard until the next session.

The bottom line

A good gamer snack is clean, quiet, one-handed and filling. Biltong comes closest. Jerky is a close second if you wipe your fingers. Chips and pizza are the worst things to put near a controller. Start with Original, portion it out before you sit down, drink water, and mute your mic while you chew.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best snack to eat while gaming?

A dry, protein-rich snack you can eat with one hand and that leaves nothing on your fingers. Sliced biltong fits well. It is high in protein, needs no utensils and keeps at room temperature. Pair it with something fresh, such as carrots or apple slices, and keep water close.

How do I keep snacks from getting grease on my controller?

Choose dry foods and avoid anything with cheese dust, oil or a sticky glaze. If you do eat something glazed, such as jerky, keep a small towel on the desk and wipe your fingers before you pick the controller back up. Portioning the snack into a small bowl also helps, because you are not reaching into a bag with a messy hand.

Is jerky a good snack for gamers?

Yes, with one caveat. Jerky is high in protein and needs no preparation, but the glaze on Meat Candy is slightly tacky. If you want the cleanest option, choose biltong. If you prefer something sweeter, jerky works as long as you wipe your hands.

What is the difference between biltong and jerky for snacking at a desk?

Biltong is air-dried, savory and a little salty, with a dry surface. Jerky is cooked and glazed, and it is sweeter and slightly sticky. At a desk, biltong is cleaner and jerky is sweeter. Both are made from beef, and ours are certified Glatt Kosher.

Can I eat dried meat during a long gaming session?

Yes. It keeps at room temperature, so it can sit on the desk for hours. It is salty, so drink water alongside it, and treat it as a snack rather than a meal. If you have a medical condition or a salt-restricted diet, ask your doctor first.

Is Grub biltong kosher?

Yes. Our biltong and jerky are certified Glatt Kosher and made from grass-fed beef, air-dried in small batches in Florida. Because it is meat, keep it separate from dairy, and wait between meat and dairy according to your family's custom.

Do you ship snacks for LAN parties and team events?

We ship across the US only, and orders over $50 ship free. The Sliced Biltong Minis and the Biltong Sampler Pack are the easiest formats to hand out, since each person gets a sealed bag.
