Post Workout Snack: Protein, Timing and What Holds Up in a Gym Bag
A good post workout snack is one you will actually eat within a reasonable time of finishing, with some protein in it and something easy on the stomach alongside. Dried beef is high in protein and survives a gym bag better than almost anything else, but it is a partner to fruit or bread, not a replacement for them. We make certified Glatt Kosher biltong and beef jerky, so we know where our own snacks earn a spot in the bag and where they do not.

What a post workout snack is actually for
The job is simple. You finished training, you are hungry, and a real meal is an hour or more away. A snack bridges that gap so you are not raiding the vending machine or skipping food entirely.
That is the whole job. No snack is a magic fix, and we are not going to promise you one. What matters in practice is a short list:
- It has protein. Most people want some protein in what they eat after training. That is the part dried beef does well.
- It is easy to eat when you are tired and sweaty. No prep, no plate, no microwave.
- It survives the trip. The snack sat in a bag, a locker or a car for hours. It had better still be good.
- You like it. A snack you skip because you are bored of it does nothing.
How much to eat, and when, depends on you, your training and your goals. If you have a medical condition, take medication or follow a specific plan, ask your doctor or a registered dietitian. What follows is the common-sense version from a food maker, not a prescription.
The three kinds of post workout snack
Almost everything people grab after training falls into one of three groups.
Cold and fresh
Yogurt, a protein shake, a cheese stick, a sandwich, a hard-boiled egg. These taste great and many are high in protein, but they need a fridge or a cooler. If your gym bag sits in a locker or a car for hours, anything that needs to stay cold is a gamble. Leave a cold snack in a warm bag and you will find out why.
If you keep kosher, one more thing applies. Yogurt, cheese and shakes made with milk are dairy. Dairy and meat are kept separate, and people wait between them according to their family's custom. That matters if dinner is a meat meal. A pareve or meat-based snack sidesteps the question.
Sweet and quick
A banana, dates, a piece of fruit, a handful of pretzels, a granola bar. These are light, easy and fast. They are not much protein on their own, so they work best as the base of a snack rather than the whole of it.
Shelf-stable protein
This is where biltong and jerky live. They are dried beef, high in protein, sealed in a bag, and fine at room temperature. You can leave one in a gym bag, a glove box or a desk drawer and it is ready when you are. That is the reason people carry them, and it is the honest case for them.
Where biltong and jerky fit, and where they do not
Here is our point of view. Dried beef is one of the best things you can keep in a workout bag, and one of the worst things to expect to do everything.
It works well when:
- You are leaving the gym with a long gap before your next meal. A few slices of biltong beats going hungry or buying something you will regret.
- You cannot refrigerate anything. A bag in a locker, a bag in a pocket on a trail, a bag on a long drive home.
- You want protein without a shake. Some people are tired of drinks. Chewing real meat is a different experience.
- You are tired and want zero effort. Tear the bag open. That is it.
It is the wrong pick when:
- You want something light and quick on a hot day. Dried meat is salty and dry. After a sweaty session, many people want fruit and water first. Have water with it, or eat the fruit first and the biltong a little later.
- You are watching sodium. Biltong and jerky are both salted. If salt matters for you, that is a question for your doctor, not for us.
- You need carbohydrates. Dried beef has protein, not carbs. If your session was long and you want something starchy, pair it with fruit, bread or crackers.
Our recommendation: treat dried beef as the protein half of the snack. Put it next to a banana, a piece of toast or a handful of dates, and you have something more complete than either alone.
Which Grub snack goes in the gym bag
We sell a few dried-beef snacks, and they behave differently in a bag and in your mouth. Here is how we would choose.
Sliced Biltong Mini's for the bag itself
The Sliced Biltong Mini's are one-ounce sealed bags in Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. For a gym bag this is the format we point people to. A Mini is a single portion, so you eat what you meant to eat. It fits in a pocket, a locker or the side of a bag, and there is nothing to measure. The portioning costs more per ounce than a bigger bag. That is worth paying when portioning is the point, and not worth paying when it is not.
Original is beef first, then the warm citrus note of coriander. It is the plain choice and suits almost everyone. Peri Peri has real heat building behind it, which some people love after a workout and some people really do not. Loaded Garlic is roasted garlic, rounder and savory rather than hot.
The 3 oz bag for home or the desk
Our Sliced Biltong comes in a 3 oz bag, sliced and ready to eat. If you know your flavor and you are eating at home or at your desk, it is better value than Minis. Our Original biltong lists no sugar in its ingredients: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. We are not going to quote a number we cannot back up.
If you are not sure which flavor you like, the Biltong Sampler Pack is one mini bag each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. It is the cheapest way to find out before you commit to a bigger bag.
Meat Candy for something sweeter
Our Meat Candy is the jerky end of the shelf: cooked, glazed and sweet. Hickory Kickory Dock is smoky hickory with the sweetness behind it. Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep is Korean BBQ, sweet and savory together. Both are real, whole sliced beef. Because of the glaze, read the label if you are watching for a particular ingredient. If you want the plainest, most savory option, biltong is the better pick. If you want something that tastes closer to a treat, this is it. Our kosher beef jerky collection has the full line.
Beef Crisps, when we have them
Our Beef Crisps, from Grub Lab, are real beef dried until it snaps. They are a test batch, so they are not always in stock. If you like crunch, they are worth trying when available.

What holds up in a gym bag
This is the part most snack articles skip. A gym bag is a harsh place for food. It gets warm, it gets squashed and it sits for hours. Here is how the usual choices hold up.
- Dried beef (biltong, jerky): Holds up well. It is shelf-stable and sealed. It still does not like a hot car. Do not leave a bag in a trunk through a summer week.
- Fruit: A banana bruises, an apple does fine, dates travel well. Fruit is a good partner but it can get beaten up.
- Nuts and trail mix: Travel well. They are not a source of the same kind of protein, and they are a problem anywhere nuts are not allowed, such as many schools.
- Bars: Usually fine, though a bar left in heat can go soft or sticky.
- Anything dairy or cooked: Needs a cooler. Without one, plan to eat it right away or skip it.
A few habits keep dried beef in good shape:
- Keep the bag sealed until you are ready. Once it is open, finish it or reseal it.
- Do not let the bag bake. A warm gym bag for a few hours is fine. A hot trunk for days is not.
- Chew slowly and drink water. Biltong is salty by design, and it is dry meat. Water is part of the plan.
- Start small. A few slices tells you more than half a bag.
We wrote a longer piece on biltong at the gym if you want the broader picture.
Simple post workout snacks, built from the pieces
You do not need a formula. A pattern helps: some protein, something easy, and water.
- A Mini bag of Original biltong and a banana.
- A few slices of biltong with a piece of toast or crackers.
- A handful of dates and a small portion of Meat Candy, when you want something sweet with your protein.
- A piece of fruit and a Mini of Loaded Garlic, for something savory without much heat.
Two honest cautions. First, if you train hard in the heat, water comes before any snack. Second, a snack is not a meal. If your next real meal is a long way off, the snack is only a bridge.
If you eat kosher, the practical side is easy. Our biltong and Meat Candy are meat products, certified Glatt Kosher, so they sit with other meat snacks and meals. Keep them away from dairy and wait between meat and dairy according to your family's custom. If your standards are particular, read about our certification and ask your rabbi if you are unsure.
The bottom line
Pick a snack you like, with some protein, that does not need a fridge. Pair it with something light like fruit, and drink water. Dried beef earns its place in the gym bag because it is high in protein, sealed and ready to eat. It is not carbohydrates, it is salty, and it does not like heat. For most people the right answer is a Mini of Original biltong next to a banana.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good post workout snack?
Something with protein that you will actually eat and that is easy on your stomach, such as yogurt and fruit, a sandwich, or a few slices of biltong with a banana. If you cannot keep food cold, shelf-stable options like dried beef travel best. Ask your doctor or a dietitian for advice tailored to you.
Is beef jerky a good post workout snack?
It is a convenient one. Jerky is high in protein, sealed and needs no refrigeration. It is salted and has no real carbohydrates, so many people eat it with fruit or bread. If you watch sodium, check with your doctor.
Is biltong or jerky better after a workout?
Neither is better for everyone. Biltong is air-dried, savory and has no sugar glaze. Meat Candy is glazed and sweeter. Choose the one you enjoy and that sits well with you.
Can I leave biltong in my gym bag?
For a day, yes. It is shelf-stable and ready to eat from the bag. Keep it sealed and out of serious heat. Do not leave it in a hot car for days.
Do biltong and jerky need to be refrigerated?
No. They are shelf-stable. Keep an opened bag sealed and finish it in good time.
Is Grub's biltong and jerky kosher?
Yes. Our biltong and Meat Candy are certified Glatt Kosher, and they are meat products. Keep them separate from dairy, and wait between meat and dairy according to your family's custom.
Does Grub ship outside the US?
No. We ship within the United States only, and US orders over $50 ship free.
