Gifts for Runners: Food for Long Runs and Race Mornings

The best food gift for a runner is the thing they eat after the run, not during it: a sealed, salty, high-protein snack that rides in a gym bag or a car cupholder. Our biltong and jerky fit that job, and both are certified Glatt Kosher, so you can give them to any runner without a conversation about ingredients.

We are The Grub Company. We air-dry biltong in small batches in Florida from grass-fed beef, and we make a sweet jerky called Meat Candy. Our biltong is certified Glatt Kosher. We are a kosher brand that sells to everyone, and plenty of our customers run.

This guide has a narrow job. You have a runner on your list. They own the shoes, the watch, the belt and the vest. You want to buy them food that fits the actual rhythm of running: the long run, the race morning, the drive home. We will be plain about where our products fit and where they do not.

Start with the honest limit

Dried beef is not fuel for the middle of a hard run. It is chewy, it is salty, and it takes a while to eat. Most runners who are moving fast want something soft and quick, and that is a different product category. We make no claim that biltong helps anyone run faster, and we are not going to start now.

What dried beef does well is everything around the run. It is the first real food after a long effort, when a runner is hungry, tired and standing in a parking lot. It is the snack in the bag for the drive to the race. It is what the person who came to cheer eats while they wait at mile twelve.

So do not buy a runner biltong to eat on the move, unless they already like to eat that way on easy days. Buy it for the other twenty-three hours. That one reframing makes the gift land.

One more caution. Runners are careful about what they eat before a race, and they should be. Anything new on race morning is a bad idea. A gift is not the time to introduce a surprise. Tell the runner it is for after, or for training days, and let them decide.

What makes a good food gift for a runner

Think about where the food will be. It will be in a gym bag, a trunk, a hotel room, a running-club cooler or a jacket pocket. It will not be near a kitchen. That tells you what to look for:

  • Sealed. A bag the runner can open, eat from and reseal beats loose food in a pocket.
  • Shelf-stable. It has to survive a hot car on a Saturday morning with no refrigeration.
  • High in protein. That is the one claim we make about it, and it is a true one.
  • Light. Runners carry things. They do not want a heavy gift.
  • Easy with one hand and no utensils. Someone cooling down in a parking lot is not going to cut anything.

Dry meat snacks pass all five. Here is how the line breaks down for a runner.

Sliced Biltong: the post-run bag

Biltong is South African air-dried beef. It is cured with salt, vinegar and spices, then hung to dry. It is not cooked the way jerky is, and it is ready to eat when the bag opens.

Our everyday bag is Sliced Biltong: three ounces of ready-to-eat slices, nothing to cut and nothing to refrigerate. There are three flavors:

  • Original: beef first, then the warm citrus note of coriander. The reference point, and the safe pick.
  • Peri Peri: the same, with real heat building behind it. Not a whisper.
  • Loaded Garlic: roasted garlic, rounder and sweeter, savory rather than hot.

The trade-off is real. Biltong is salty and chewy, and a runner with a sensitive stomach after a long effort may not want it for an hour. It is the wrong gift for someone who only wants sweet food after a run. And Peri Peri is the wrong pick when you do not know the person, because heat after a hard effort is not everyone's idea of a treat. Buy Original unless you know better.

Minis: for the gym bag and the race bag

The Sliced Biltong Mini's are one-ounce sealed bags in the same three flavors. They fit a gym bag side pocket, a drop bag or a glove box. A runner can leave one in the car for the end of the long run and forget it is there until they need it.

Minis are also the right size for a group. If you are buying for a running club or a relay team, a Mini each is an easy thing to hand out at the finish. Per ounce, Minis are the most expensive way to buy biltong. That is a portioning premium, and it is worth paying when portioning is the point.

The Sampler Pack: when you do not know their taste

The Biltong Sampler Pack is one mini bag each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. If the runner has never had biltong, this is the safest gift. They find out what they like at their own pace, and they find out about the heat on their own terms.

Meat Candy: for the runner who wants sweet

Meat Candy is our beef jerky. It is cooked, glazed and sweet, where biltong is savory and air-dried. Two flavors: Hickory Kickory Dock, smoky hickory with the sweetness behind it, and Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep, Korean BBQ, sweet and savory together.

If the runner says they like jerky but not biltong, this is the better gift. Meat Candy has a glaze, so anyone with an allergy or a dietary rule should read the label first. You can see the whole range of kosher beef jerky on one page.

Gifts by the kind of runner

Runners are not one person. Match the gift to the actual human.

The marathon trainee on long-run Saturdays

Their week is built around one long effort, usually early on a weekend morning. The food that matters is what they eat when they get back. Give them a few three-ounce bags of Original Sliced Biltong. One goes in the car for the end of the run. The rest wait in the kitchen for the next long Saturday.

The first-time 5K runner

They signed up with a friend and are not sure about any of it. Do not give them a training-science gift. Give them the Sampler Pack and a note that says it is for after the finish line. It is low pressure, and it makes the finish feel like something to look forward to.

The runner who is tired of gels

Some runners get sick of sweet, sticky food by the end of a training block. For them, something savory is a relief. A bag of Original or Loaded Garlic is a very different taste from the usual products. Say plainly that it is for after, not for the run.

The race-weekend traveler

They are flying or driving to a race and sleeping in a hotel. A hotel room has no kitchen, and the hours around a race are a bad time to hunt for food. A few Minis in the carry-on solve that. Biltong needs no refrigeration, so it is easy to bring. If you are flying, check the airline's current rules for carrying food. Our guide to biltong for endurance athletes goes deeper on where dried beef fits around long runs and rides.

The spectator and the running partner

People forget the person who stands at the side of the course. A partner, a parent or a friend spends hours waiting, and they get hungry too. A bag of biltong for them is a gift that costs little and gets used.

How to wrap it so it feels like a gift

A bag of snacks can feel like an afterthought. Three ideas that cost almost nothing:

  • Make a finish-line kit. A Mini, a clean towel, a small bottle of water and a card that says "open after the last mile." It is the closest thing to a custom gift you can build in ten minutes.
  • Use a race bib as the card. If the runner has an old bib, tape it to the front of a gift bag. They will notice.
  • Write a training-log note. On a plain card, write a line for each long run: Original, Loaded Garlic, Peri Peri. It reads as a joke and works as a menu.

If you would rather skip the wrapping, the sampler arrives ready to hand over. To buy in larger amounts, Buy Biltong Online lists every size, flavor and sampler, and US orders over $50 ship free.

Check these before you buy

  • Do they eat meat? Biltong and jerky are beef. They are the wrong gift for a vegetarian.
  • Do they keep kosher? Ours are certified Glatt Kosher, which makes them easy to give. They are meat, so a runner who keeps meat and dairy separate will keep them that way. How long to wait between meat and dairy is your family's custom. Ask your rabbi if you are unsure.
  • Is there an allergy? Read the ingredient list on the product page. Our Original biltong lists grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. Peri Peri adds red pepper and brown sugar. Meat Candy has a glaze, so check its label.
  • Is the runner on a special diet, or training under a coach or doctor? If so, ask them. We only say that our products are high in protein. For anything medical, ask your doctor.
  • Where is it going? We ship in the US only. If the runner lives abroad, we cannot send it.
  • Is a race coming up? Order early enough that it arrives before the weekend. And tell the runner to eat it after the race, not before, unless they have tried it in training.

Bottom line

Do not buy a runner food for the middle of the race. Buy them something good for the hour after it. For most runners that is a bag of Original Sliced Biltong. If you are not sure, the Sampler Pack. If they like sweet, Meat Candy. Say it is for after, wrap it like a finish-line kit, and they will remember it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good food gift for a runner?

Something sealed, shelf-stable and high in protein that a runner can eat after a run without any preparation. Biltong and jerky fit well. Original Sliced Biltong is the safest flavor, and the Sampler Pack is the safest gift when you do not know their taste.

Can runners eat biltong during a run?

Some do on easy days, but we do not recommend it for hard efforts. Biltong is chewy and salty, and it takes time to eat. We see it as a snack for after the run or for the bag, not a fuel for the middle. Anything a runner eats during a race should be something they have tried in training. If you have a question about what to eat while running, ask your doctor or a coach.

Does biltong need to be refrigerated?

No. Biltong is air-dried and shelf-stable, so it is fine in a gym bag or a car. Keep it out of direct sun when you can, and reseal the bag after you open it. Our guide to storing kosher jerky and biltong has the details.

Is this a good gift for a runner who keeps kosher?

Yes. Our biltong is certified Glatt Kosher, so you do not have to hunt for a certification on the label. It is a meat product, so it follows the usual rules for meat. On Passover, check for a Pesach certification, and ask your rabbi about anything you are unsure of.

What flavor should I buy if I do not know their taste?

Buy the Sampler Pack. It has one mini bag each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. If you can only pick one flavor, pick Original. It is the mildest and suits the most people.

Can I ship it straight to the runner?

Yes, within the US. US orders over $50 ship free. We do not ship outside the United States.

How much should I buy?

For one runner, a three-ounce bag or a sampler is a real gift. For a running club or relay team, give each person a Mini. For a runner in a heavy training block, look at the larger sizes on our Buy Biltong Online page.
