Is Meat Candy Keto? The Honest Answer on Sweet Jerky and Low-Carb Diets

Meat Candy is not a keto snack, and we would rather say so plainly. It is our jerky, and it is cooked with a sweet glaze. That glaze is what makes it candy, and it means sugar. If you are counting carbohydrates, our Original biltong is the one to reach for. Here is the reasoning, so you can decide for yourself.

Why sweet jerky and keto do not mix

Keto works by keeping carbohydrate low enough that the body runs mainly on fat. Most people following it keep to somewhere around 20 to 50 grams of carbohydrate a day. Anything sweet eats into that budget quickly.

Jerky in general is made by marinating thin-sliced beef, usually with sugar, and cooking it for a few hours. Sweet jerky goes further: the flavor is built on the glaze. Our two Meat Candy flavors, Hickory Kickory Dock and Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep, are both deliberately on the sweet side. That is the point of them, and it is also why they do not belong in a strict keto plan.

The exact sugar and carbohydrate figures are printed on every bag. Read them against your own daily limit before you decide.

What to eat instead if you are keto

Product Added sugar Fits a strict keto plan?
Biltong, Original None Yes. Next to no carbohydrate, around 36 g protein per 3 oz
Biltong, Loaded Garlic None listed; contains tomato powder Yes, with a small allowance for the tomato
Biltong, Peri Peri A little brown sugar in the blend Usually, but check the bag if you count closely
Meat Candy (both flavors) Yes, it is glazed No for strict keto

The reason biltong fits where jerky does not is the method. Biltong is never heated and never marinated in sugar. It is whole muscle washed in vinegar, salted, spiced and dried in moving air over several days. The Original blend is beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar, and that is the whole list.

What about low-carb, but not strict keto?

If you are eating lower-carb rather than keto, a few pieces of Meat Candy as a treat can fit, the same way a square of chocolate can. Treat it as the sweet thing in your day, not as your protein snack. Biltong is still the better everyday choice: more protein, no added sugar, and it fills you up without starting a sugar craving.

What about paleo or "whole food" eating?

Meat Candy is made from real, whole sliced beef, not ground or reformed meat and not mechanically separated chicken, which is common in the cheaper end of the jerky aisle. So on the question of what the meat is, it passes. The glaze is where it parts company with strict paleo rules, for the same reason as keto.

So who is Meat Candy for?

  • People who love classic sweet jerky and want a better-made one.
  • Someone new to dried meat, who will find sweet jerky more familiar than biltong at first.
  • A table where people want both: biltong for the savory side, Meat Candy for the sweet.
  • Anyone looking for a certified Glatt Kosher jerky, which is harder to find than it should be.

The short answer

Keto, or counting carbs closely: biltong, Original. Want something sweet, and happy to count it as a treat: Meat Candy. Plenty of people keep both in the house, and each one does its own job.
