Keto Snacks: The Meat Snacks That Fit, and the Labels That Do Not
The meat snacks that fit keto are the ones where the ingredient list is meat, salt and spices, and nothing sweet. Dried beef like our certified Glatt Kosher biltong is the easy version, and glazed jerky is the one to check before you buy.

Keto snacking has one job: keep carbs low without eating the same cheese stick all week. Meat does that well, because meat has essentially no carbs on its own. The trouble is everything added to it. This guide sorts keto snacks by what is in the bag, explains where carbs hide in "high protein" meat snacks, and says plainly where our own products fit and where they do not. Everything we make is certified Glatt Kosher, so we also flag what works in a kosher kitchen.
What makes a snack keto-friendly
A keto diet keeps carbohydrates very low and leans on fat and protein. Exact targets differ by person and by doctor, so we will not hand you a number. What we can tell you is how to read a snack.
- The first ingredients should be a whole food. Meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, olives. Not a syrup, a flour or a starch.
- Sugar goes by many names. Brown sugar, honey, cane juice, dextrose, maltodextrin and fruit juice concentrate all count. Check the sugar and carbohydrate lines on the panel.
- Serving size is the trap. A bag that lists two servings is one serving if you finish the bag.
- "Keto" on the front of a package is marketing until you read the panel. A front-of-package claim is not a nutrition fact.
If you only remember one rule, remember this one: the shorter the ingredient list, the fewer places carbs can hide.
Meat snacks that fit
Dried meat is the most portable keto snack there is. It is sealed, it needs no refrigeration, and it does not need a fork. But "dried meat" covers two very different products, and they behave differently on keto.
Biltong
Biltong is air-dried beef. The meat is cured with salt, vinegar and spices, then hung to dry. Sugar is optional rather than structural, so a plain biltong can have a very short, very low-carb ingredient list. We are a biltong maker, so weigh that accordingly. We still think this is the clearest fit.
Our Sliced Biltong is the everyday bag, three ounces of ready-to-eat biltong, with nothing to cut and nothing to prepare. Here is what is actually in each flavor:
- Original: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic, vinegar. No sugar in the list.
- Loaded Garlic: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, garlic, roasted garlic, salt, tomato powder, vinegar. No sugar listed. Tomato powder is in there, so it is not a single-ingredient snack.
- Peri Peri: the Original recipe with red pepper, and it adds brown sugar. Great flavor, but if you count carbs closely, it is not the one to start with.
Our Original biltong lists no sugar in its ingredients: grass-fed kosher beef, coriander, black pepper, salt, garlic and vinegar. If you want it, check what is available before you order, and confirm on the label of the bag you receive. We are not going to quote carb counts here that we cannot source for you. The panel on the bag is the number to trust.

Jerky
Jerky is cooked in a marinade, and the marinade is usually sweet. That makes jerky the meat snack to read twice on keto. Our Meat Candy is a good example of why. It is real sliced beef, cooked and glazed on purpose, in Hickory Kickory Dock and Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep. It is the sweeter end of our shelf, and we do not pitch it as keto. If you are tracking carbs, check its label before you decide.
That does not make every jerky off limits. Some are made with little sugar, and the label will tell you. If you want to compare, our kosher beef jerky collection shows what we make, and our read on the two styles is in Meat Candy vs. Biltong.
Beef crisps
Our Beef Crisps (2oz, a Grub Lab test batch) are real beef dried until it snaps, with the crunch of a chip. They are a limited run, so check the shop for availability. For any meat crisp or stick, apply the same test: read the ingredient list for sweeteners and fillers.
Carnivore snacks: a stricter list
A carnivore diet is narrower than keto. People who follow it eat animal foods and little else. That changes how you read a biltong bag.
- The beef is the point. Beef, salt and not much else is the cleanest fit.
- Spices are a personal call. Our biltong uses coriander, black pepper, garlic and vinegar. Some strict carnivore eaters skip plant spices. Others do not mind. We cannot decide that for you, and biltong is the wrong pick if your rules exclude any plant ingredient at all.
- Sweet glazes are out for most people. That includes our Meat Candy.
Our Biltong Slabs are a pound of uncut biltong in Original, Peri Peri or Loaded Garlic. They are already spiced, so they do not solve the spice question. They solve the cutting question: you slice to whatever thickness you like, as you go.
Other keto snacks, and the kosher catch
Meat is not the only answer, and a week of nothing but jerky gets old. These are the common choices and what to watch.
- Hard-boiled eggs. Protein and fat, almost no carbs. They need a fridge and a shell, so they are better at home than in a car.
- Cheese. Hard cheese is low in carbs and holds up in a lunch bag. It is dairy, so keep it apart from meat, and wait between meat and dairy according to your family's custom. If you are not sure what yours is, ask your rabbi.
- Nuts. Good fat and protein, but easy to over-eat, and the candied or honey-roasted kind is not keto at all. Nuts are also a common allergen, which matters at school or the office.
- Olives and avocado. Low carb and filling. Neither travels well once opened.
- Pork rinds. A standard keto crunch, but pork is not kosher, so this is not an option for a kosher household. Beef crisps are the closest kosher swap.
Whatever you buy, a "kosher-style" claim means nothing without a certification mark. Check the packaging.
Where the carbs hide in meat snacks
Most of the damage is done by a few things.
- Sweet marinades. Teriyaki, honey, brown sugar and "sweet and spicy" flavors.
- Fillers. Some cheap meat sticks use starches or flours as binders.
- Dextrose and maltodextrin. Often added in small amounts and listed late, so scan the whole list, not just the first line.
- Serving size. The panel may describe one ounce while the bag holds three.
A good habit: read the sugar line first. If it is zero or close to it, read the ingredients to confirm. If it is not, the snack is a treat, not a staple.
Which snack for which moment
- Desk drawer, car, flight: Original or Loaded Garlic biltong. No cooler, no utensils.
- Trying it for the first time: buy the smallest bag. Our Buy Biltong Online page shows every size and flavor, including minis and a sampler.
- Home, after a workout: eggs or cheese.
- Shabbos or Yom Tov: dried meat needs no cooking or reheating, which is useful when the kitchen is off limits.
- Craving something sweet: a bag of glazed jerky will not give you that on keto. Be honest with yourself and pick another way to get there.
Bottom line
For keto, pick meat that is meat, salt and spices. Original and Loaded Garlic biltong fit that description, Peri Peri adds brown sugar, and glazed jerky such as Meat Candy is a label-reading job. Strict carnivore eaters should decide about the spices first. Trust the nutrition panel over any front-of-bag claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is biltong keto?
It can be. Biltong is air-dried beef cured with salt, vinegar and spices, and sugar is optional. The ingredient lists for our Original and Loaded Garlic contain no sugar. Peri Peri includes brown sugar. Always check the panel on the bag you are buying.
Is beef jerky keto?
Not by default. Jerky is cooked in a marinade, and most marinades contain sugar. Our Meat Candy is glazed and sweet by design. Read the label before you decide.
What is the best keto snack on the go?
Something sealed, shelf-stable and low in sugar. Plain dried meat fits all three. Eggs and cheese are good at home but need a cold place to live.
Is biltong carnivore-friendly?
It is mostly beef, but ours includes spices such as coriander, black pepper and garlic. Whether that fits depends on how strict your version of carnivore is. If you exclude all plant ingredients, it is not the right pick.
Are there keto snacks that are also kosher?
Yes. Certified kosher dried beef, eggs, nuts, olives and hard cheese all work. Keep cheese and meat separate and wait between them according to your family's custom. Pork rinds are not kosher.
Does biltong need to be refrigerated?
Not in the sealed bag. It is shelf-stable, which is why it works for a desk, a bag or a car.
Does Grub ship outside the US?
No. We ship within the US only, and US orders over $50 ship free.
