Groomsmen Gifts: Food Gifts They Will Not Leave at the Hotel
The best food gift for groomsmen is something sealed, shelf-stable and small enough to fit in a suit pocket or a carry-on: a bag of premium jerky or biltong beats a basket that has to be unpacked at the hotel. Ours is certified Glatt Kosher, which means the whole wedding party can eat it, whatever their diet.
We make kosher meat snacks. We air-dry biltong in small batches in Florida from grass-fed beef, and we make a sweet jerky called Meat Candy. Our biltong is certified Glatt Kosher. We have watched a lot of groups of men open a bag of it, and we have a view on what makes a groomsmen gift work and what makes it a hotel-room leftover.
This guide covers why food is a smart groomsmen gift, what to look for, how to give it, and where food is the wrong answer.
Why most groomsmen gifts get left behind
Think about where a groomsmen gift lives for its first 48 hours. It sits in a hotel room. Then it goes into a rental car, a suit bag, or a carry-on that is already full of dress shoes.
That is the real test. Not "is it nice?" but "will he still be carrying it on Sunday?"
Three kinds of gifts fail that test again and again:
- Anything bulky. A boxed decanter set or a large tin is lovely at the rehearsal dinner and a problem at the airport.
- Anything fragile. Glass and ceramics do not love a trunk full of luggage.
- Anything that needs setup. If it has to be assembled, charged or paired, it stays in the box.
Food passes if you choose it well. It is used up, so there is nothing to store. Nobody has to find shelf space for a bag of snacks. And the best of it gets opened that same weekend, at the moment the gift is still connected to the person who gave it.
What a groomsmen food gift has to do
A wedding weekend is long, loud and badly scheduled for eating. Groomsmen are up early, in a suit by noon, standing for photographs, and often do not eat a real meal until the reception is well underway. So the snack has a job.
- It needs no refrigerator. Hotel mini fridges are small and often full. Dried meat does not care.
- It needs no utensils. A bag opens in one hand while the other holds a cummerbund.
- It survives a pocket and a flight. Dry and sealed means it goes in a jacket, a gym bag or a carry-on without leaking. For the detail on traveling with it, see our guide to what survives a trip and what does not.
- It is high in protein. That is the one thing we will say about nutrition, and for a day of standing and not eating, it is the right thing to say.
- It is something he would not buy himself. That is what makes it a gift rather than a granola bar.
The last point matters most. Premium biltong and good jerky sit in a sweet spot: familiar enough that nobody is confused, special enough that it feels like you picked it.
Which Grub product for which kind of groomsman
Do not buy one flavor for the whole party and hope. Groomsmen are a mix: college friends, brothers, a cousin you have met twice. Their spice tolerance varies. Here is how we would pick.
The safe default: a small bag of each flavor
Our Sliced Biltong Mini's are one-ounce sealed bags in Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. One ounce is roughly one sitting. It is a bag a groomsman finishes in the car or the suite, with nothing left over to carry.
Original is beef first, then the warm citrus note of coriander. It is the reference point and suits everyone. Peri Peri has real heat building behind it. Not a whisper. Loaded Garlic is roasted garlic, rounder and sweeter, savory rather than hot.
A practical way to build a set for a party of seven: give each man one Original, one Peri Peri and one Loaded Garlic Mini. Everyone gets the full range and nobody ends up stuck with a flavor he does not like. Peri Peri is the one that divides a room, which is entertaining at a bachelor party and inconvenient at a rehearsal dinner. If you are not sure about someone's tolerance for heat, he still has two flavors that are not hot.
The one-box version: the Biltong Sampler Pack
If you want something that arrives as a single, finished gift, the Biltong Sampler Pack is one mini bag each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic. It is the whole range in the smallest amount that tells you anything. For a groom who wants to hand each groomsman one thing, one pack per man works.
The sweet option: Meat Candy
Biltong is savory, salty and air-dried. Not every guy likes that. For the friend who says "I just want normal jerky," our Meat Candy is cooked, glazed and unashamedly sweet. It comes in two flavors. Hickory Kickory Dock is smoky hickory with the sweetness behind it, closest to what most people mean by jerky. Baa-Baa BBQ Sheep is Korean BBQ, sweet and savory together. If you have a group that leans toward sweet, a bag of each is a good split. It also uses a glaze, so if anyone in the party has a food sensitivity, have him check the label.
Not sure where to start? Our kosher beef jerky collection puts the jerky and the biltong in one place.
Why "certified Glatt Kosher" matters in a mixed wedding party
A wedding party is rarely uniform. One groomsman keeps kosher. Another keeps halal. Another is vegetarian, or has simply stopped eating food he cannot identify. You do not want to hand out a gift that one person in seven has to politely hold and not eat.
A certified Glatt Kosher product removes one of those problems. It is certified, so a kosher-keeping groomsman does not have to read a label and wonder. Everyone else just gets very good beef. If the wedding is a kosher one, or the groom's family keeps kosher, it also means the gift fits the event rather than clashing with it.
The honest limit: if a groomsman is vegetarian or vegan, this is the wrong gift for him. We make beef, and only beef. Ask the groom first, or hand that man something else.
How to give it so it feels like a gift
A bag of snacks handed over in a parking lot is a snack. A bag of snacks given with a little thought is a groomsmen gift. A few ways to close that gap:
- Put it with a second, durable thing. A good pocket knife, a leather card holder, a pair of nice socks. The food is the part he uses on the weekend. The other piece is the part he keeps.
- Give it where it will be used. The morning of the wedding, in the suite, before the photographs. Not at the rehearsal dinner, where he has already eaten.
- Write a line on the bag or a card. One real sentence about why you asked him to stand up with you. That is what he will remember.
- Keep the number simple. One Mini of each flavor, or one Sampler Pack, per man. Do not make it a pile.
On quantity: count the whole party, then add one for the best man's own set and a spare. People forget to count themselves, the officiant, or the cousin who steps in at the last minute.
Ordering, shipping and timing
Shipping is US only, and US orders over $50 ship free. Order well before the wedding. Do not order the week of, because the whole point is to be calm about the gift.
Ship to yourself, not to the hotel. A package that goes to a hotel front desk can go missing, and you are the one who will be there to check. If the wedding is out of town, pack the bags in your own suitcase. They are flat and light.
If the party is large or the gifts are for a bigger group, our Buy Biltong Online page shows every size, flavor and sampler. For ideas about putting several pieces into one parcel, see our guide to biltong gift packs and care packages.
When food is the wrong groomsmen gift
We make food, so you might expect us to say it fits every case. It does not.
- If you want a keepsake, food is the wrong pick. A groomsman who wants a lasting object to remember the day by will not get that from a bag of biltong. Pair it with something engraved or leave it out.
- If the party is vegetarian or vegan, skip it. We sell beef only.
- If everyone is flying home on a long, tightly packed trip, check the airline's and your own carry-on rules. We cover the basics in the travel guide linked above.
- If a groomsman is very particular about spice, do not hand him Peri Peri and wish him luck. Original is the safe flavor.
The bottom line
A good groomsmen gift gets used, travels well and fits the man. Dried beef checks all three boxes: sealed, light, high in protein, and a little bit of a treat. Buy a one-ounce bag of each flavor for every man, add something durable if you want a keepsake, and give it on the morning of the wedding when he can use it. Choose certified Glatt Kosher and the whole party can eat it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good food gift for groomsmen?
Choose something sealed, shelf-stable and easy to carry. Small bags of biltong or jerky work because they need no fridge, no utensils and no setup, and they survive a hotel room, a rental car and a flight home.
How many Minis or Sampler Packs do I need?
Count one set for each man in the wedding party. That is either one Mini each of Original, Peri Peri and Loaded Garlic, or one Biltong Sampler Pack, which contains one mini bag of each. Add a spare in case someone is added at the last minute.
Is the biltong kosher?
Yes. Our biltong is certified Glatt Kosher. If you have a specific question about your family's practice, ask your rabbi.
What if a groomsman does not like spicy food?
Original and Loaded Garlic are not hot. Original is beef and coriander. Loaded Garlic is savory and roasted rather than spicy. Peri Peri is the hot one, so it is the flavor to skip or swap out for a man who avoids heat.
Should I give jerky or biltong?
Biltong is savory, salty and air-dried. Jerky, which we call Meat Candy, is cooked, glazed and sweet. If you do not know the group's taste, give biltong in Original. If you know they lean sweet, give Meat Candy. Plenty of people want both.
Do you ship outside the United States?
No. We ship only within the US, and US orders over $50 ship free. If the wedding is abroad, bring the bags in your luggage, and check the destination's rules on bringing in meat products first.
Can I give food on its own, or should I add something else?
You can give it on its own, and it will be used. If you want the gift to last beyond the weekend, pair the snack with a small durable item such as a card holder or a pocket knife.
