When Can I Have Dairy After Meat? Wait Timer

Ate some jerky and wondering when you can have dairy? Enter when you ate and your family's custom, and this timer tells you the time. A snack counts: jerky is meat. The custom is yours to follow, and your rabbi's to settle if you are unsure.

When can I have dairy?

Works for jerky, biltong, or any meat.

Customs differ between families and communities. Some count from the end of the meal, some from the last bite. Ask your rabbi if you are not sure which applies to you.

The common customs

  • Six hours is the most widespread, among Sephardim and most Ashkenazim.
  • Into the sixth hour (a little over five hours) is how some count the six.
  • Three hours is kept in some Ashkenazi communities, including many of German origin.
  • One hour is the traditional Dutch custom.
